Newman’s Own

“The marathon in Africa … I’m halfway out and barely chugging. Mountain coming! Liquid needed! What’s around? Water’s bitter! Beer’s flat! Gator, Blah Blah! … Fading fast. Then a vision — sweet Joanna! — tempting me with pale gold nectar … lemon is it? Yes, by golly! Lemonade? No, Lemon Aid! … Power added! Asphalt churning … Cruising home to victory! Hail Joanna! Filched the nectar (shameless hustler!) — In the market — Newman’s Own!”

We used to have a fairly limited set of products available to us through the on-campus La Verde’s Star Market. So we got around to trying pretty much everything. One such product from the beverage department was “Newman’s Own” Lemonade. We got it more than once, so it must have been pretty good.

Anyway, one day we noticed that it had this ridiculous bit of (dare I say?) poetry, on the side. We had a hearty laugh or two over its silliness. Like so many things, this prompted eventual memorization and regular recital.

I seem to recall that it was “Yes, by golly!” – what think you, Wes?

  3. Geoff says:

I verified with an actual container that it is “Yes, by golly!” as I had postulated. We now have more accurate information than Newman’s Own website. Look for Mitwhiz Lemonade in a store near you!
